Biography

Dedan Kimathi was a Kenyan freedom fighter who led the Mau Mau uprising against British colonial rule. He is widely regarded as a national hero and a symbol of Kenya's struggle for independence. Captured and executed by the British in 1957, his legacy inspired generations to fight for freedom and justice.

Life Story

Born in Nyeri, Dedan Kimathi attended the Karatina Mission School and later became a teacher. He joined the Kenya Defence Forces (Kikuyu) and rose to become a senior military leader of the Mau Mau. He was captured on 21 October 1956 and sentenced to death. His remains were never returned to his family, but his spirit endures as a symbol of resistance. Kenya's Independence Day honours his sacrifice.
