Patrice Lumumba

Patrice Lumumba

February 7, 1925 - January 17, 1961 (Aged 35 years)

Biography

Patrice Émery Lumumba was the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A passionate pan-Africanist, he played a central role in the country’s independence from Belgium in 1960. His assassination in 1961 shocked the world and made him a martyr for African unity.

Life Story

Born in Onalua, Belgian Congo, Lumumba worked as a postal clerk and journalist before entering politics. He co-founded the Mouvement National Congolais (MNC) and became Prime Minister after the first democratic elections. His government was overthrown in a coup, and he was executed by firing squad. His remains were dissolved in acid, but his legacy endures. The UN declared 17 January as "Lumumba Day" in memory of his sacrifice.
