Biography
Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by tackling institutionalized racism and fostering racial reconciliation. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
Life Story
Born in Mvezo, South Africa, Mandela studied law at the University of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand. He became involved in anti-colonial politics and joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1943. He was imprisoned for 27 years for his activism. After his release in 1990, he led negotiations to end apartheid. He is remembered as a global symbol of peace, forgiveness, and human dignity.
