Steve Biko

Biography
Steve Biko was a South African anti-apartheid activist and founder of the Black Consciousness Movement. He believed that Black liberation required psychological and political empowerment before armed struggle. His death from injuries sustained in police custody made him an international icon of resistance against racial oppression.
Life Story
Born in King William's Town, Eastern Cape, Biko studied medicine at the University of Natal, where he became active in student politics. He co-founded the South African Students' Organisation (SASO) and later the Black People's Convention. He was banned by the apartheid regime in 1973 but continued to work underground. He was brutally beaten by security police and died on 12 September 1977. His funeral was attended by thousands.
