Wangari Maathai was a renowned environmentalist, political activist, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. She founded the Green Belt Movement, which planted over 51 million trees across Kenya and empowered women through environmental conservation. She was the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. Her life was dedicated to environmental conservation, democracy, and human rights. Her legacy continues to inspire environmental activists worldwide.

Life Story

Born in Nyeri, Kenya, Wangari pursued higher education in the United States, earning degrees from Mount St. Scholastica and the University of Pittsburgh. She became the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a PhD. She served as chair of the National Council of Women of Kenya and was elected to parliament. She was also an associate professor at the University of Nairobi. Her work has inspired environmental movements globally, and her birthday is celebrated as National Tree Planting Day in Kenya.
